Introduction to Discrepancy in the News

The media over the years has become a less trusted institution by the people as the media has had a hand in the increased polarization of the political landscape. Whether its covering the election, the pandemic, or any conflict such as January 6th, there is a glaring difference in the ways news networks develop and broadcast stories. These discrepancies are often in part due to political opinions becoming more apparent in the media which has led to the media pushing their own narratives rather than focusing on getting the facts of the story straight. This blog will highlight current events covered in the media and the discrepancies that develop between the different major news outlets.

  1. This is a great insight. I think if people are only getting their news from news platforms such as Fox News and CNN it can be biased. This causes people to take opinions as fact which leads to the polarization of the citizens. To prevent this people need to get a well rounded sense of the news. They need to be pulling from multiple sources and through multiple platforms.

  2. After reading over many blogs, one thing that caught my attention with yours was the use of a visual poll. Polls tell us what proportion of a population has a specific viewpoint.
The media over the years has become a less trusted institution by the people as the media has had a hand in the increased polarization of the political landscape. Polls are simply a measurement tool that tells us how a population thinks and feels about any given topic. This can be useful in helping different cultures understand one another because it gives the people a chance to speak for themselves instead of letting only vocal media stars speak on behalf of all. Opinion polling gives people who do not usually have access to the media an opportunity to be heard.
Whether it's the election or the epidemic. When you want to highlight current events presented in the media and differences that arise across major news outlets, the media needs to know what the public wants to see and hear.

  3. Great post! It got straight to the point, and I think the use of a graphic is very important when dealing with numbers. Television broadcast stations have become more biased than ever now. People used to lean on the media for facts, but it seems as if they are all too opinionated. If you watch Fox and CNN, the truth will lie in the middle.

  4. With political opinions becoming more involved in media, do you think that is a major reason why the public has begun to distrust the media even less? In the graphic not a single percentage got above 50% so most people have a general distrust with any information they get from news sources. With major news outlets having such different discrepancies, what do you think has to be done to get the public to trust mass media again?
